Position Overview

The Clarington Baseball Association (CBA) is seeking a qualified and respected individual to serve as Umpire-in-Chief (UIC). The UIC provides leadership, oversight, and accountability for all umpiring activities within the Association, playing a key role in upholding fair play, safety, and respect across all divisions.

This position is critical to maintaining the integrity of the game and supporting umpires in an increasingly challenging sport environment.


The UIC reports to the CBA Board of Directors.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Standards


  • Serve as the primary authority on umpiring matters within CBA

  • Establish and enforce officiating standards, expectations, and professionalism

  • Ensure umpires are appropriately assigned based on experience and level of play

  • Support umpires in managing on-field conduct and escalating issues when required


Recruitment, Training and Development


  • Recruit, train and retain umpires across all CBA divisions

  • Coordinate pre-season clinics, mentoring and in-season development

  • Ensure umpires meet Baseball Ontario certification and screening requirements


Scheduling and Assignments


  • Oversee umpire assignments for all games and tournaments

  • Manage substitutions, shortages and coverage challenges

  • Ensure fair and balanced distribution of assignments


Accountability and Discipline


  • Review incident reports related to officiating and sideline conduct

  • Work with the Discipline Committee on matters involving abuse, harassment or misconduct toward umpires

  • Recommend disciplinary action when warranted

  • Maintain accurate records and reports

  • Communication and Reporting

  • Act as liaison between umpires, coaches and the CBA Board

  • Provide mid-season and year-end reports to the Board

  • Attend board or committee meetings as required


Required Credentials

Baseball Ontario Umpire Certification – Level 2 (minimum)


  • Level 3 certification strongly preferred

  • Must be in good standing with Baseball Ontario

  • Must meet Baseball Ontario screening requirements (18+)

  • Demonstrated experience officiating competitive youth baseball


Preferred Credentials (Assets) 

  •  Baseball Canada National Program certification (Level 4 or 5)

  •  Umpire Instructor or Course Conductor certification

  •  Experience officiating provincial playdowns or elimination tournaments

  •  Prior leadership experience supervising or mentoring umpires

Term and Compensation

  • Seasonal appointment with annual review

  • Compensation or honorarium commensurate with experience and scope of responsibility
